The Central Artery Project in Boston, Mass, referred to
"the big dig" is one of the largest federal
and state expenditures for highway relocation in the history
of the United States. This project includes bridges and
tunnels to better flow traffic in and out of this major
capitol city. Symmetry Products group/foam technology
a div. of Lance Ind. Int. Inc was selected to provide
over 500 truckloads of their product called EPS foam tech
Geofoam.
Geofoam is used to provide Soil Stabilization on 11
highway abutment Ramps connecting tunnels and roadways
on the Central Artery project. Geofoam replaces lightweight
fills normally used to build up the ramps which are
old road building technology. Geofoam is lightweight
and shipped to the site in blocks approximately 2ft
x 4ft x 9 ft with a density of approximately 2 lbs per
cubic foot. The blocks are shipped to the site and strategically
placed in a pattern with Gripper plates between them
to create a large "structure" which eventually
supports the distribution slab under the roadway. The
blocks of Geofoam are environmentally safe, lightweight
and do not compress over long periods of time causing
settlement in the roadway. Geofoam is the solution to
problems in the road building business encountered for
years.
The Big dig project started in August of 2002, and
all the geofoam structures will be shipped by the end
of 2003.
